This scent was not achieved by essence of jockstrap as the show would have you believe but via the discovery of a brand new essential oil that had never appeared in a perfume before. Per its official description, the real scent has: "Top notes mint, melon, green leaves, peach and bergamot middle notes are carnation, orris root, jasmine, marigold, ylang-ylang, cedar and rose base notes are sandalwood, amber, patchouli, musk, oakmoss, vetiver and incense." These scents have been chosen because of what they say about Halston, but are not what the real Halston scent smells of-after all, a perfume that brought together flowers, cigarettes and the smell of sex would probably be a bit much for the mass market. The scents that Halston chooses for his perfume are tobacco, orchids and that jockstrap-tobacco to represent his incessant smoking and his general lust for life and partying, orchids because of his love of beautiful things and his extravagant flower bills, and the jockstrap to represent his gay identity that was hidden from the public. The jockstrap is not the only invented part of that scene.

This scene seems to be a screenwriter's fantasy, with Halston and Adele's conversation about scents put in to give the show an opportunity to explore the character's backstory. Unsurprisingly, this scene did not actually happen-or, if it did, it was not recounted in Simply Halston, the biography that the Netflix show was based on. In a deliberately provocative moment, she smells this by draping it over her face and inhaling deeply. She asks him to suggest some scents to her from his past and present to make his perfume, and he replies by bringing her a used jockstrap from his lover Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez).

Perhaps the most audacious scene, however, comes when Halston is working on his first perfume with parfumier Adele (Vera Farmiga).

If nothing else, watch it for Ewan McGregor - a master at work.Netflix series Halston features a number of pretty wild scenes, from a woman dying in the air vents of Studio 54 to Halston's (played by Ewan McGregor) phone getting so clogged up with cocaine that it stops working. Halston is one of the best shows I’ve seen in ages. Beyond the glamour, money and mad nights in Studio 54, they were just a bunch of outsiders who got together for a while. It’s like they woke up hungover after some house party and said 'Jesus, what was that all about?'. I won’t give away what happens in the last episode, but time heals and some of the gang get back together for one final hurrah. I’ve seen some people say that the graphic sex is gratuitous - I think that’s just because it’s gay sex, and even then it’s nothing compared to It’s a Sin. There have been a few quibbles about the show online.

They get each other, they love each other, which makes it all the more tragic when the gang falls out over money and professional jealousy. Halston’s friends and colleagues are glorious outsiders with a point to prove. In the end though, this show is about camaraderie. (You don’t have to be into fashion to like this - it’s basically Mad Men with suede and cocaine.) The music and clothes are off the scale brilliant. Halston can be bitchy and mean, but McGregor plays it with such a mix of vulnerability and charm that you’d forgive him almost anything. But there is still huge feel-good warmth as the story unfolds.Įwan McGregor, Rebecca Dayan and Shawna Hamic in Halston Money and cocaine take their toll, as Halston and friends pretty much move in to Studio 54 and dance their lives away.

The French crowd re-enact an opera for their designs Halston has Lisa Minelli singing a song about Paris. In one blast of an episode we get to sit in on the Battle of Versailles, a fashion-off (that actually happened) between top designers from Paris and New York. His designs revolutionised fashion in America and the world, with new fabrics, simple designs and a stiff middle finger to stuffy haute couture.

Halston has his own gang in 1970s New York, including Lisa Minelli, played brilliantly here by Krysta Rodriguez. Ewan McGregor plays Halston with some kind of vengeful intensity, reminding us - in case we ever forgot - that he’s in the Hollywood 1%, one of the best actors of his generation.
